Yo! Basecamp
Who We Are

Yo! Basecamp's Chief Instructors and Staff are professional and courteous, prioritizing participants' safety and comfort at all times. All Chief Instructors are expert guides and certified Wilderness First Responders.

Chief Instructors

Andy Puhvel,  Yo! Basecamp Co-director/Chief Instructor, prides himself on spending part of every day of his life in nature, whether it's free-climbing El Capitan in Yosemite, skiing in the Sierran  backcountry, or mountain biking and playing in the dirt with his two sons. Participants benefit from Andy's extensive climbing career (as a record-setting big-wall speed climber and crankin' boulderer) and from his love of his home state of California. Before founding Yo! Basecamp, he was a high school English teacher and the assistant director of a non-profit indoor climbing program for at-risk youth. Andy holds a Master's Degree in Education, a California teaching credential, a Wilderness First Responder medical certificate, and speaks three languages (English, Estonian, and Spanish).

When Lisa Coleman-Puhvel, Yo! Basecamp Co-director/Chief Instructor, discovered the profession of outdoor education, she was stoked. She finally found a way to combine her love of teaching with her love of the outdoors. She also loves to play with gravity: 5.12 sport routes, El Cap's Salathe Wall, Astroman, and Denali (a.k.a. Mt. McKinley) are on her ascent list; ski- and mountain-bike racing have given her plenty of descents, too. Before founding Yo! Basecamp, she was an instructor for Outward Bound and a middle school English teacher. Lisa holds a Master's Degree in Education, a California teaching credential, and a Wilderness First Responder medical certificate.

Yo! Basecamp Staff

The Yo! Basecamp crew is eager to make your summer a blast. They are fun-loving, caring outdoorspeople who take pride in making sure each YB camp is a positive experience everyone will remember.
